Summer Safety

As the dog days of summer arrive, it is important to protect your pets from the heat. These common sense rules will help keep your pets safe and comfortable. It is important to remember that heat stroke is an emergency and should be treated immediately by your veterinarian.

1. NEVER LEAVE A DOG IN A HOT CAR, not even for a few minutes with the windows cracked. Leave them at home or leave the air-conditioning on.

2. ALWAYS PROVIDE A COOL, SHADED AREA FOR YOUR PET WITH PLENTY OF FRESH WATER.

3. KNOW IF YOUR PET IS AT RISK OF HEAT STROKE! Some breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, or Persian cats are at high risk. Also overweight, senior pets, or those with lung and heart problems (heartworm disease) are at risk.

4. DON'T FORCE EXERCISE WHEN IT IS TOO HOT! Many pets will continue to run and play in an effort to please their owners beyond what they can withstand, early morning or late afternoon is best.

5. DON'T LEAVE PETS UNSUPERVISED WHILE SWIMMING! Whether in the pond, lake, or pool many pets don't know when to stop. At worst they could drown or at the least aspirate water and develop pneumonia.

6. KEEP YOUR PET GROOMED! While it is true that fur provides insulation against the heat, matted hair or a thick undercoat prevents proper air circulation. Along with making your pet more prone to overheat it can also lead to skin infections.

HOPEFULLY THESE FEW TIPS WILL HELP YOU AND YOUR PET HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!
